Chieftain o the Puddin Race is Saved | 27-08-2002 |
Burns National Heritage Park joined forces with the Scottish Press and Scottish celebrities such as Denis Law and Andy cameron to defend the traditional haggis when the Food Standards Agency suggested the Bard's favourite dish could be banned. Demonstrating an appalling ignorance of the recipe for traditional haggis, the FSA was proposing a ban, since it made use of sheep's intestines. In a response to an attack on Scots culture not dissimilar to the banning of Gaelic or the prescription of tartan that English goivernments have carried out in past ages, Burns National Heritage Park called for a public free haggis tasting at the Tam o'Shanter Experience, supported by local butcher Pollock Williamson. The public tasting, scheduled for 2.30pm at the Tam o'Shanter Experience on Friday 30 August will now go ahead as a celebration of the right of Scots worldwide to enjoy haggis prepared the way Robert Burns himself would have enjoyed it. There is no more fitting venue for celebration of the haggis than Burns National Heritage Park in Alloway, where the world's first ever Burns Supper (featuring, of course, haggis) was held in 1801. Park Director, Nat Edwards, said, "as long as Burns Cottage is still standing, we will fight for the right to eat haggis!" Current News Update 17-03-2005 Future of the Burns National Heritage Park
