Lines
of poetry inscribed on the window of the Cross Keys Inn, Falkirk
For Burns, writing verse was often a spontaneous activity,
done on the spur of the moment in the countryside, on horseback
or, as here, scratched into an alehouse window. Unlike poets
such as Wordsworth, who suggested poetry should be "emotions
recalled in tranquil reflection", Burns was a passionate
man who felt inspired to compose on the spot.
