This painting depicts the exchange of bibles and traditional gaelic wedding vows, between Robert Burns and Highland Mary Campbell, in a secret ceremony at Stairaird Crag.

The bible Burns presented to Mary can still be seen in Burns National Heritage Park.

Poor Mary waited in vain for Robert to take her away to the West Indies, but died of a fever before he could fulfil his secret vows.
