Thus bold, independent, unconquerd, and free,
Her bright course of glory for ever shall run,
For brave Caledonia immortal must be,
Ill prove it from Euclid, as clear as the sun:-
In 1814, local admirers of Robert Burns began to raise a subscription for a lasting monument to the poet in his birthplace. In 1820, the foundation stone was laid with full Masonic honours by Alexander Boswell, son of James Boswell, the famous biographer. The monument opened to the public in 1823 and has since become a place of pilgrimage for admirers of Scotlands National Poet and a focus for events celebrating his life and work.
Spectacular views of Burns beloved Alloway can be found from the roof of the Monument, which is designed to represent the three historical divisions of Ayrshire; Cunningham, Kyle and Carrick.
