Burns' most famous tale was inspired by the ghost stories he heard growing up in Alloway. As well as an original manuscript of the tale and items such as Souter Johnie's handguard, which belonged to one of the characters (Burns used his own cronies as models for the characters in Tam O'Shanter), Burns National Heritage Park houses many examples of works inspired by the poem.
