Pre-Visit

a) Plot dates onto a timeline 1740 - present day

b) Research information related to Captain Cook's explorations.

The Visit

a) Locate the timeline in the Museum. Work in pairs to retrieve information.
- make a quiz for your partner

b) Discuss the chart of Captain Cook's voyages, focusing on the appearance of the world at the time.

Post Visit

a) Discuss the events that took place during the lifetime of Robert Burns

b) In groups, listen to examples of music composed at the time, e.g. Works by Handel, Beethoven and Bach. Create your own music to express the mood of Burns' poems, e.g. "To A Mouse", "Tam o'Shanter"

c) Handwriting and presentation - discuss writing toll before pens and pencils were developed. Practice writing using a variety of quills, pens, etc and styles, e.g. Cursive, calligraphy script. Use Burns poems as stimulus for formal handwriting. Make parchment using tea bags to stain paper, giving an aged effect.

d) Refer to aviation exploration, i.e. the first hot air and hydrogen balloon to cross the channel (1783 - Montgolfier brothers) and compare to current balloon adventures.

e) Work in pairs to design, build and modify models of Hargreaves' spinning jenny.

Extension Work

a) Research information related to the industrial Revolution, Produce Information Booklets.

b) Discuss changes from time to time of Tam o'Shanter to present time. Make a list of comparisons.
